You can become a dental assistant after a year or so of training. You may like the job enough to want to pursue other dental assistant courses in the future and improve your chances of advancement in this career.
Starting with the basic
Generally, with the basic dental assistant courses, you will be qualified to find work in dental clinics, specialty hospitals or in private offices of licensed dentists.
It's really nothing complicated once you get the hang of things. Other employers don't even require prior training and just let you learn on-the-job.
But if you're armed with fundamentals in dentistry, have knowledge about terminology, equipment, procedures and even an overview of other tasks like taking x-rays before you even start work, then you have a bigger advantage when competing for jobs.
Other options
Another dental assistant course is for expanded functions dental assisting. It's more technical and will eventually prepare you for chair-side assisting. With this to back you up, your chance of getting a better salary increases since you are taking on more responsibilities.
Beyond working in the clinical set-up, you may eventually want to do something else still related to the field of oral health care. There are dental assistants who take up additional administrative courses to become office managers.
Or you may want to be an educator yourself and teach in a dental assistant school. Having had experience both studying and working as a professional, you bring a lot of insight with you as a mentor. You will want to take up additional courses not just in dental assisting but in education as well.
Others with a dental assistant background end up as dental product sales representatives. It comes in handy knowing what dentists and a dental clinic need by way of equipment, materials and supplies. And it pays to know procedures so you can better convince your prospective buyers.
Positive outlook
Dental assistant courses may not be very extensive. So experience is definitely a plus to open up more opportunities for career advancement when you become a dental assistant.
Then again, the outlook for this profession is very positive given the growth in population. More people mean more prospective patients. And this is especially true now when preventive oral health care is becoming popular, and aesthetics includes taking better care of your teeth.
