A dental assisting school can teach you the skills you need to not only manage the office duties required of a dental assistant, but also the tasks that directly involve helping the dentist work with the patient.

Dental Assistant Programs

If you want to attend an accredited dental assisting program, you can complete a 1 year certificate course or a 2 year associate's degree. each will give you theory as well as preclinical practice to properly prepare you for your workload. At a dental assisting school, you will take up science classes on anatomy and physiology, oral anatomy and pathology, tooth morphology, microbiology, preventive dentistry and the anatomy of the head and neck.

Dental Assistant Training

You will also take classes in CPR, business administration, lab procedures, dental materials, assisting the dentist chairside and infection control. Finally, there will be people skills taught by means of communication classes, human relations, psychology and speech communication. You will also have practical workshops in dental radiology, using dental materials, pre-clinical procedures and have an internship to complete at a dental clinic. An associate's degree will give you more advanced theory classes as well as additional clinical training to better prepare you for attaining your license or certificate and later finding a job.

Dental Assistant Certification

Once you have completed your dental assistant school, you have the option of becoming certified by taking the Dental Assisting National Board Exam which will show your competency in the field. The Dental Assisting National Board also offers other exams, such as the Radiation Health and Safety exam, which when passed is recognized by most states.

You may also have to take a licensing exam, which is a requirement from most states these days since they want to regulate the practice of dental assistants. Obtaining your license or becoming registered may require you to take some additional hours of training in a state regulated course to be eligible for the licensing exam.

Dental assisting school is definitely the smart choice if you want to become a dental assistant, even if it is not mandatory. It will prepare you for the work to come, give you a better chance getting a job and teach you the skills that you may later need to take your licensing exam. The theory is useful and the practical training and internship are invaluable. To get ahead in the field, it is the right decision to make.
